Is Endometriosis a Pre-Existing Condition in NZ?

In most NZ health insurance underwriting, endometriosis is commonly treated as a pre-existing condition if:

  • symptoms existed before cover started
  • there’s any history in medical notes
  • investigations or treatment began before the policy date

What that often means

On individual policies, insurers frequently apply an exclusion for endometriosis and related complications.

That does not mean you cannot get health insurance. It means:

  • you may not get claims paid for endo-related treatment
  • but you can still be covered for unrelated future issues

Wondering what your options could look like?

If you want to see what insurers would offer you, we can run a quick comparison.

The option that can change the outcome

If your workplace can access a group scheme, pre-existing cover may be available depending on eligibility and scheme terms.

If you want to map your options, start by reading our Guide to Pre-Existing Conditions, or talk to us about whether:

  • individual cover still adds value for you
  • a group scheme is realistic
  • or whether there are insurer offers worth considering
